Hello Fine Families,

This week students in 4th and 3rd grade will be taking the MCAS exam for English Language Arts. At Friday's Hawk Hero Assembly, we 'Rocked Out' and wished them all luck because we know they will do great! During this assembly we also reminded our whole school about the importance of maintaining a quiet building during testing. We talked about respectfully walking in the hallways to ensure testers are able to concentrate and do their best work! We hope you can have these same conversations with your students as well! An email was sent to grade 3 and 4 families with specific MCAS reminders. Please be sure to take a look at that message.

Testing is as scheduled- Gr. 4 Monday 4/7 & Tuesday 4/8, Gr. 3 Wednesday 4/9 & Thursday 4/10.

At our Hawk Hero Assembly, we also celebrated our STMath- March Mathness Winners! Congratulations to Mrs. Pierce's 4th Grade class. This class was knocked out early in the competition but made their comeback as a Wild Card and won! Their prize was Lunch in the Teachers' Lounge and Popsicles with the Penguin! Second Place- Mrs. Gaffney's K class, Third Place- Mrs. Ingles' 3rd Grade Class, and Fourth Place- Mrs. Killion's 2nd Grade Class.

Lastly, please remember that Friday, April 11 is a half day of school. Students will be dismissed at 12:25 and No lunch will be served. It is also important to remind you that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 18th and April Vacation is April 21-24th.

Thank you to Mrs. Perches and her fantastic team of teachers who helped to put together our fun and exciting Title One Literacy Night- Camp Read-A-Lot! There were lots of literacy games to be played and even a little Campfire Karaoke hosted by our music teacher Mrs. B.

It was so nice to see all of our families enjoying their time together playing, singing, and having fun! Thank you all for coming we hope you enjoyed the event.

For the month of March, students in Wellness have had some fun learning opportunities. In Health they have learned about “Healthy Helpers” and who in the community they can go to for emergencies. We talked about the different role models in our school and in Attleboro, and how they can help us in different situations.

In PE students have continued their “Hyman Fine Records” events. This month they completed basketball hotshot and longest football throw. Next month, we will be looking to go outside for a ¼ mile run and 40-yard dash. For their special sport unit, students learned the basic skills of “pillo-polo”, which is a stick game similar to hockey.

We are excited to share the Elementary Ed Tech Update with you! This update highlights the work our tech coaches are doing with classroom teachers during their coaching rounds. It provides a glimpse into the tools and strategies being used in the classroom to support student learning. 

We hope this gives you a better understanding of how technology is being integrated into your child’s education. If you have any questions or would like more information, feel free to reach out to your school. 

PTO has been very busy already in the month of April! At last month's PTO meeting, we approved several financial staff requests for the following items:

Kindergarten: Caterpillars for their butterfly unit

PE/Health: Featherlite Volleyballs and bounce house for Field Day

Art: Buses for 4th grade MFA field trip

Schoolwide:  2-year supply of blue home school folders

On April 17th, we will be having another Night Out at United Skates. There is no school on April 18th, so the perfect night for the kids to stay up a little later!

We are in the home stretch leading up to our Fun Run in May, as well as staff appreciation. Be on the lookout for communication about both of those events. 

This is the LAST CALL for 4th grade parents to submit baby pictures or candids.  Baby pictures can be emailed to Hymanfineelementarypto@gmail.com. Candids can be uploaded right on to the lifetouch site (see flier for more information).

Your student's attendance is very important. The more time spent in school learning, the more academic progress and success students can make. Not to mention, it's fun to be with friends, learning, growing and playing together. Building good habits and routines for coming to school will help create a solid foundation for your students educational journey.

It is important to note that students are deemed Chronically Absent by the state when they reach 18 days out of school in a year. This includes both excused and unexcused days as it tallies the total number of days a student is out of school. It is still important to communicate reasons for absences, so please continue submitting doctors' notes when applicable. Communication from families helps us have a better understanding of absences and allows us to better support students and families. We will continue to communicate with families any updates regarding our attendance records and we appreciate your continued support.

Spring Things…from the Health Office

     Spring is here with sunny, warmer days and early emergence of pollen and molds that trigger seasonal allergies.  Children, who have never been diagnosed with seasonal allergies before, may be affected when the pollen/mold levels are high.

     Common symptoms include itchy/watery eyes, nasal stuffiness/drainage, scratchy throat, and headaches. If your child suffers from allergy symptoms, please contact your doctor for advice on eye drops, nasal sprays, or an appropriate non-drowsy allergy medication that can be taken before school to provide all day relief from symptoms.

     Poison Ivy is everywhere.  Contact with the oil from the plant’s leaf causes irritation and a red pimple-like rash.  Children should wear appropriate clothing to protect their skin from exposure to poison ivy, especially in wooded or grassy areas.  Showering after being outdoors is also good practice to prevent irritation.  If a skin rash develops, over-the-counter medications such as caladryl lotion or hydrocortisone cream will provide relief from minor symptoms.  When the rash affects the face or eyes, contact your doctor, as a prescription medication may be needed.  It is important to remove over-the-head clothing carefully to protect the face and eyes from contact with poison ivy on clothing.

     As outdoor evening activities increase, the time of day when mosquitoes are most active, use of bug repellent can help prevent bites.  Ticks can be found in the woods, but also in low bushes, grass and on pets.  It is good practice to check children and pets for ticks when they come in from outdoors.

     Drinking enough fluids and good nutrition are very important during the warm weather as the body works harder to regulate temperature.  Please encourage your child to have a full glass of a beverage, preferred water, with breakfast and to bring a drink for snack and lunch.  Sunscreen can be applied in the morning at home since recess is usually outdoors, weather permitting.
