Dear Hill-Roberts Families,

Thank you so much for joining us for our “Welcome Back Night”! While the name is a bit of a misnomer—since we’re already four weeks into the school year—it was truly a wonderful open house event. The turnout was phenomenal for any evening, but especially impressive given the rainy weather. We even ran out of scavenger hunt pamphlets because so many students participated with enthusiasm!

A few quick highlights from this weeks newsletter: Book Fair Volunteers needed (See PTO section), Picture Day ordering is open, Race for Ed on 10/31 and t-shirts, and reading at home.

Finally, a special shout-out goes to our Kindergarten students who are now more than 10 days into their school journey—double digits! They are doing a wonderful job learning routines, meeting expectations, and showing great effort each day. We are so proud of them and of the strong start to our school year.

Sincerely,
Dr. Paul Madden, Principal
Ms. Julie O’Boyle, Assistant Principal

Tip of the Week

Dress in layers and label your coats, jackets, and hoodies!

The mornings are getting colder. We heat up during recess and its often warm by dismissal. Layering is great and labeling keeps the great stuff with you!

On 10/31 we will be hosting our annual PTO fundraiser, Race for Ed. Students will be provided with a free t-shirt to wear and they will have the option to wear it to school or put it on at school on Friday, 10/31.

Students will be walking around as part of Race for Ed, but we will not be doing a costume parade. Please keep costumes, costume props, and/or make-up at home. If you have any questions, please feel to reach out to us.

Heads Up: New Drop-Off and Pick-Up Routine in October

We are still working on the new drop-off and pick up routine. We were asked to consider a few additional items by the city and the bus company. As always, we are committed to doing our due diligence and would rather roll out a new plan later, but more carefully. After all, safety is our main goal :). Thank you for your continued patience.

HRES HW Policy - Reading Expectations per Night, by Grade Level

At Hill-Roberts, we believe that strong literacy skills are the cornerstone of lifelong learning and success. Rather than make homework a chore for families, we keep the focus on independent reading. Although other, smaller assignments are given, reading is the bulk of the homework. Also, since all students read at different paces and levels, time reading (effort) rather than pages of reading is our measure of success. Of course, if homework becomes a chore for you, reach out to us and we are happy to support. Thank you for your support!

Kindergarten - 10 minutes of reading or being read to per night (plus menu of at home activities)

Grade 1 - 10 minutes/night of reading per night (plus menu of home activities)

Grade 2 - 20 minutes per night of reading (plus math practice 2-3 times per week).

Grade 3 - 20 minutes per night of reading (plus math practice if needed)

Grade 4 - 30 minutes per night of either reading, LEXIA, or ST Math.
