Tip of the Week - Winter Recess Success - Wear Layers

Recess is held when the weather is dry and the feels-like temperature is 25 degrees or above.

Layering can help make cold weather fun a lot more comfortable. Layering is the practice of prioritizing wearing multiple layers of clothing, rather than one, super-heavy, cold-weather jacket. Layers help trap air in, which believe it or not is an excellent insulator (that's why down feathers work so well).

Typical New England layering practices include wearing 3-4 Layers, that is, a base layer, one or two mid-layer(s), and an outer-layer

  • Base layer: t-shirt or long-sleeved t-shirt. If sports related, the layers should be wicking, that is, synthetic- or wool-based.

  • Mid-layer: could be a long-sleeved shirt, fleece, or a hoodie on top of a t-shirt. Again, go synthetic or wool if sports related.

  • Optional, 2nd mid-layer - for super cold days when we would probably have indoor recess anyway (good for hard core hikers) - Fleece, if over a hoodie OR thin insulated vest, if over a fleece.

  • Outer-layer: A typical winter coat would do. Anything that blocks the wind and is water resistant will do, but if this layer is thin (like a rain coat), then you would definitely need a 2nd mid layer (like a fleece).

Also remember cold related injuries start with the hands, head, and feet.

  • Wear a winter hat. We lose 7-10% of our body heat from our heads. Hats are essential!

  • Wear gloves!

  • Avoid running/athletic shoes with "breathable mesh sides"

Label your gear! More gear, more to lose. Help us, help you!

Idea

Bus Students - Car to Bus, Morning Pick Up

Students must be waiting for their bus on the sidewalk. It is both a safety and efficiency issue when students are running from their cars to the bus stop. Student can slip on wet/dry leaves or ice. Also, even in nice weather, this significantly delays the bus and, ultimately, inconveniences all families. Thank you for your attention to this matter and your support to making morning pick up safe and efficient for all.

Walkers - Side Walker Door Closes at 8:45am

Please ensure that your students arrive with adequate time to walk to the walker door by 8:45am (Apple phone time). Morning announcements start at 8:50am and classes start promptly thereafter. Both walker students and walker door staff need to be heading to class at 8:45am. If you are running late, please head to the front office to check-in. Thank you!

Message from the Mayor - Water Emergency

Please see the following links from Attleboro’s Mayor for important updates on the current water emergency and information on the city’s alerting and messaging system: Water Emergency Update & Alert and Messaging System
